All About Raffia

All of our products are made with love from a sustainably sourced material: Raffia. Raffia originates from the native raffia tree and is grown in the rainforests of Madagascar. The raffia gives a fiber coming from its leaves, thus by extension, bears the name of raffia (also written as raphia). These palm trees have the longest leaves, (can reach 25m by 4m in dimensions), and are one of the strongest raffia in the world. Madagascan use the fibers harvested from these trees to traditionally weave the baskets. Once treated, the fiber is soft, pliable, strong, durable, easy to dye and biodegradable.

One of the most frequently asked question: " where is Madagascar located? Is it like the movie Madagascar?"

Madagascar, also known as the red island because of the color of the soil, is situated in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa across the Mozambique Channel. It is the world's second largest island country after Indonesia.

Madagascar is well known for its lemurs, as seen in the movie release 'Madagascar" but it also an island rich in resources and with a extremely hospitable and welcoming population.
